Oil spills can be really damaging to swans stripping their feathers of waterproofing. Some times in more milder cases the swans can be left to wash it off them selves here at the sanctuary (under close supervision to prevent them getting to wet or drowning)

But in the more extreme cases they need a little bit of help. In this case swans are showered off by two members of staff, using washing up liquid which helps break down the oil and speeds up the process.
